Arudra darshan is the sighting of the cosmic dance of Lord Nataraja, a manifestation of Lord Shiva. . It is observed in the Tamil month of Margazhi, latter half of December and first half of January. The cosmic dance is visualised in the form of a golden red flame that dances in every particle of the universe. The festival falls on Thiruvadirai star and celebrated on a full moon day, this time 11th January, 2017, also has the longest night of the year.

 

Holy land of Chidambaram

 

According to mythology, Lord Vishnu was lying on his five-headed snake mount Adisesha, in a blissful and thoughtful mood. The serpent was curious and asked Him what he was thinking. He replied that he was imagining the cosmic dance of Lord Shiva. When Adisesha asked whether it was possible for him to witness the same, the Lord advised him to observe severe penance. It was at the holy land of Chidambaram that the serpent meditated for many years to appease Shiva. Finally, he was lucky to witness the celestial dance along with sages Vyagrapada and Patanjali on the auspicious day of Arudra darshan. And that’s how the renowned temple of Chidambaram came to exist.

 

It’s vital to fast on this day. Devotees go without food made of grains and pulses and sing praises of Lord Shiva. The fast begins the previous night itself and goes on the next day and finally broken after a visit to the temple and performing pujas.
