Sri Krishna Jayanthi is also known as Krishna Janmashtami or Gokulashtami. This is a Hindu festival predominantly celebrated in North India. This festival is the celebration of the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna. He was the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Lord Krishna plays an important role in Mahabharata. Janmashtami is celebrated on the eighth day of the Shravan month, which usually falls in August. This year Krishna Janmashtami falls on 14th August.

Lord Krishna was the son of Vasudev and Devaki. He was their eighth son and he was born in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, which was the ruling capital of Yadavas. There was a prediction that the tyrant King Kamsa, Devaki’s brother will be killed by the eighth child of Devaki. So, he locked both of them in a prison cell and also he killed the six children of Devaki and the seventh was a miscarriage. After Krishna was born, Vasudev immediately took Krishna to Gokul and quietly placed the child next to a sleeping Yashoda, wife of Nanda, king of Yadavas.
Vasudev returned with the daughter of Nanda. King Kamsa thought that she was the daughter of Devaki. He tried to kill her but she flies into the air and warns about his imminent death. Finally, Lord Krishna who grows up in Gokul kills his uncle, King Kamsa.
