Mahalaya Paksha is the sacred fortnight of offering oblations to departed souls of your family. Performing Tarpanam during this auspicious period is very auspicious as it fetches the blessings of the ancestors and also relieves them of their sins.

Each day of the Mahalaya Paksha is ruled by a particular moon phase also called thithi and the benefits of doing the same on a particular day are different.

The Aswayuja fortnight is called the Mahalaya Paksha as it is sacred for offering oblations to forefathers. The last day is the new moon day, is very important for performing the rites.

The Fifteen Thithis Or Moon Phases

Mahalaya Paksha consists of fifteen thithis or phases of Moon i.e Pratipat, Dvitiya, Tritiya, Chaturthi, Panchami, Shashti, Ashtami, Navami, Dasami, Ekadasi, Dvadasi, Trayodasi, Chaturdashi and finally Amavasya. The last being the most auspicious called Mahalaya Amavasya. Performing pujas on this day and offering of food on this day can pull you out of all ordeals and tribulations in life and lead you to a path of success.

As the story goes, Karna, the most benevolent hero of Mahabharata, left the mortal world and moved to heaven. All that he gave as charity on earth was given to him as is, in the form of gold and silver while he wanted food to satisfy his hunger. But the gods asked him to go back to earth to feed the hungry and return. It took him one fortnight to donate food to Brahmins and poor and also offered oblations of water during the time. These fourteen days are observed in the Mahalaya Paksha.

Why Perform Tarpanam On Amavasya

There are basically two reasons for all our problems.

  1. That which arises out of improper planetary placements 2. Problems caused by ancestral spirits

This is the time to fix all problems and fulfill desires by performing oblations to the departed souls from whom we have inherited our traits and lineage.

When we please them they help us in solving problems related to health, finance, career, relationships within family etc.
