Varalakshmi Vratham

 

Varalakshmi Vratham is generally celebrated on the Friday before the full moon in the tamil month “Aadi”. This festival celebrates Goddess Lakshmi who is Lord Vishnu’s consort. The Word “Vara” in Vara Lakshmi stands for boon thus, this deity is known for granting all the boons of her devotees. There are various festivities associated with Goddess Lakshmi among them Varalakshmi Vratham is renowned in the southern states of India. This ritual is considered auspicious because of its strict observance of certain practices and austerities.

Varalakshmi Vratham’s History

According to kanda Purana, once Goddess Parvathi inquired Lord Shiva about a vratha for women to which Lord Shiva replied with the narration of the importance of Varalakshmi Vratham. To illustrate the significance of this viratham, Lord Shiva narrated the story of Charumati.

As per the story a woman named Charumathi lived with her family who was devoted to her husband and family to a greater extent. Impressed by the devotion of Charumathi towards her husband and family, Goddess Lakshmi appeared in her dream and insisted her to observe Vratha.

Charumathi followed her instructions and carried out the vratha with ultimate piety and devotion. She engaged all her neighbors, and relatives in the pooja with devotion and good heart. As a result of it Charumathi was showered with the nine precious gems, gold, emeralds, pearls, diamonds etc. and all the people who participated in the pooja were drenched with wealth, joy and prosperity by Lakshmi.
