In Vedic literature, especially Ramayana, the auspicious day of Vivah Panchami is considered to be very significant and sacred. Lord Rama is the eldest son of King Dasarata of Ayodhya. He is an avatar of Lord Vishnu. On a beautiful day of Panchami, the month of Margashira or Karthika, the Lord Rama visited Janakapuri, the place where Sita was born. He broke the mighty bow of Lord Shiva in the swayamvara and married the beautiful Mother Sita.

Swayamvara, A Unique Practice Of Choosing One’s Own Groom

In ancient times, a suitable set of prospective bridegrooms were invited to grace the swayamvara, swayam means self and var means groom, so choosing a groom by oneself. The ceremony was organised by the girl’s father especially in royal households. The observance was so extraordinary that grooms had to exhibit their special skills to win their bride. And that’s how our protagonist Lord Rama who was a great archer showed his exemplary talent to break the bow and win the hand of Sita.

The Story From The Past

Sage Vishwamitra, worried by the torture that he suffered from the hands of demons who were not allowing him to perform his religious duties, went to King Dasaratha of Ayodhya. He requested the King to send his two sons Ram and Lakshman to destroy the demons. After completing their task successfully, the sage took the two Princes to Janakapuri to witness Swayamvara of Sita. Lord Rama married Sita after lifting the mighty sacred bow and stringing it. Only the Lord was successful in his attempt while the other suitors failed.
